An exhibition of work by artist Davy Brown – and who better to introduce it than the man himself?!

“I’m delighted to have been invited to exhibit at the Burgh Hall in Dunoon as part of my 75th birthday celebrations.

I have strong links with Dunoon and with the Burgh Hall. My wife, Jill, comes from Dunoon, and her late father, James Tyre, was the first Educational Art Adviser in Scotland. He, along with the writer, Naomi Mitchison, was responsible for the Argyll Collection; a unique body of 20th Century artworks, mainly of Scottish origin. Thanks to his passion and his vision, the collection today constitutes one of the most important educational resources in Britain.

The work for my forthcoming exhibition has been created over the last eighteen months, and derives from not only my adopted region of Galloway, but from other venues up the west coast of Scotland from Argyll to Orkney.

From my earliest days as an artist, visiting Cornwall and meeting many of the Modernist St. Ives artists, I have been fascinated by the special light of the south-west tips of the U.K, which is evident in Cornwall, Galloway and parts of Argyll. Common to all of them is the relatively unspoilt nature of the landscape. I am drawn to the rugged coastline, the harbours, the rock structures and the irregular and often broken-down farm buildings.

I have drawn inspiration throughout my life from the St. Ives School, The Scottish Colourists, The 40s Neo-Romantic Movement in London and The Cubists.

Since my first exhibition at The Citizens Theatre in Glasgow over 50 years ago, I have held over eighty one-person shows throughout the UK and The USA and I am very much looking forward to the opening of my show in Dunoon on the 17th of October.”

Work in this exhibition will be available to purchase.
