Victorian Horticultural Shows

In June 2024 Dunoon Burgh Hall celebrated its 150th Anniversary. Paid for by public subscription, the building epitomised the altruistic nature of Victorian Society. We are commemorating this occasion with a heritage research project inspired by the annual show of ‘Dunoon and District Horticultural Society’.

At those historic shows nurserymen, gardeners and amateurs from Dunoon, Blairmore, Rothesay, Carbeth and Greenock presented their work in this highly competitive display. Fruit and vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants were beautifully presented on our stage and under the balcony. The 1905 Dunoon Flower Show culminated in a ‘Grand Concert’.

Today we celebrate the community’s achievements with this event which includes:

A Showcase of produce from the local community: fruit, vegetables, flowers, pot plants & ferns, jams & preserves and vegetable animal creations. All things horticultural!

  • Raise a glass to DBH’s Architect Robert Bryden with Dunoon Goes POP. Help celebrate our 150th anniversary and pick up your final bottle of limited edition Rhubob and Bryden drinks syrups in the hall. Learn more about the heritage of soft drinks making and future plan to develop Dunoon Goes POP into a heritage inspired social enterprise.
  • A performance from Dunoon Players – a newly written piece inspired by this project called The Horticultural Society Show’.
  • A display of artwork created by Kirn Primary School.
  • An art workshop for children and young people led by LOCAL ARTIST Jill Bryson
  • Heritage displays from Dunoon Burgh Hall’s own archives, as well as contributions from the local community.

This event is part of Doors Open Days 2024.
