An exhibition of work by three Cowal-based Scottish artists with European heritage;
Inge Bos, Jane H Dee and Gabor Horvath.
Inge Bos
Inge Bos is a Dutch painter, based in Argyllshire. A graduate of Utrecht School of Art (1995) she has exhibited extensively in the Low Countries and Argyll Scotland as well as running an educational project consisting of painting and sculpture workshops as a basis for team building and self exploration.
Inge’s work focuses on presence and environment-specific here and now. She makes photographs and sketches of landscapes, that she might identify structures in the interplay of dark and light. Structure evokes presence. Presence defines structure. Presence and structure together inhabit the moment and evokes memories, atavistic, collective memories, the experiencing of which sets the image in motion and alters reality from first impression (slowly) to deeper layers,
Jane H Dee
Through her work, Jane seeks to visualise how we fit together as individuals, as a community, within our surroundings and with God: a process she refers to as, Mapping Wholeness. From present day local surroundings to challenging and inspiring years lived overseas, Jane explores her own and others lived experiences of this journey. A visualisation is developed reflectively though community connection, meditation, sketching, photographing and writing. Her work finds light in our weighty, negotiated journey, carrying and weaving together our identity-stories of transition, roots and faith, with intergenerational, ethnic and cultural alternate realities. As a Visual Artist, Jane’s work includes installation, 2D and wearable art, décor design, teaching and writing. She is largely self-taught and Jane’s art making is a sensory journey through interdisciplinary processes of research, medium, techniques and construction.
In this collection, Jane’s explores mapping wholeness through the overlapping of individual and community journeys so that a globalised story begins to emerge. The work explores how we engage with complex cross-cultural and multicultural issues in the everyday, particularly when another’s normal is so very different to our own. Community narrative and individual struggle are layered together with joy and vibrancy that allows for the tension of belonging and displacement, to co-exist. Through collaging, textiles, weaving and colour, each piece uniquely visualises commentary that evokes reflection, memories and felt responses, as we consider the overlap of self within our own contexts, and imagine others in theirs.
Gabor Horvath
Gabor is a collage artist based in Tighnabruaich. His creative process revolves around recycling discarded magazines and paper, exploring the endless possibilities of transforming what others might deem as trash into something of value.
“While I have always worked with traditional collage techniques such as cutting and gluing, recent commissions have allowed me to experiment with new mediums and techniques such as spray paint, stencil, and mixed media. The unique colours, patterns, and images that I discover within these materials serve as my inspiration and guide my creative process.
Creating my pieces is a time-consuming process that requires patience and attention to detail. Each piece requires sifting through hundreds of magazines to find just the right amount of colours or the perfect small image that can connect the overall piece. It’s a closed environment where I cannot choose the materials I work with, which forces me to adapt and push the limits of my creativity.
One of the most fascinating aspects of my work is how each piece can be viewed from a distance as a complete image, yet upon closer inspection, it reveals hidden images, messages, and story lines. My art is a puzzle, and I invite my audience to take a closer look and become a part of the story.”
